War had been declared -- I was only a young child at the time. I saw a German plane scanning the trees. The plane was shot down later.
I was riding my bicycle in Chestnut Street, a tiny hamlet near Sittingbourne. There was an aircraft shot down with two German pilots still in it. I also watched a German plane actually come down, with both pilots killed, as their parachutes wouldn't open. They are buried in Borden Cemetery.
Once, we were walking out of our door, when four bombs came out -- they made a crater the size of two houses!
A spitfire shot a "stooker" plane -- my mother went inside. She was frightened.
We saw pilots on fire.
Behind our meadow, the army had a lorry stationed, with a decoy light. My mother used to do a meal for them, every Friday night.
Once, when I was in my pushchair, we went for a picnic. We saw a Zeppelin coming towards us -- we couldn't hear anything -- until it went off!
