My Aunt Linda (right) who was in the Womens Timbercore.
My childhood memories were living with my grandparents, always a housefull of Forces People which were friends of Aunts and Uncles. Uncle died first in 1940, he was a navigator of a plane as part of the 226 Squadron Royal Airforce. He was flying a mission over France dropping leaflets instructing the French to blow up the bridges. My Aunt was in the Womens Timbercore driving people to work and was killed at a railway crossing in Worksop.
The street next to ours was hit Mustars Road, Nottingham. My Grandmother took me to the shelter for safety where we joined the rest of Epperstone Road residents. I remember thinking incenderies that were dropping were fireworks! On returning home we found they had put the bucket of water the sand and our laundry which was wrapped in brown paper and string on the fire!
Instead of an Anderson Shelter we had a Morrison Shelter based in the kitchen, a steel top and mesh sides.
My Grandfather & I dug up the lawn and we started the "dig for Britain" to grow fresh veg etc. we also kept chickens both for eggs and meat. My Grandfather took me everywhere with him, those were such happy days on the crossbar of my Grandfathers bicycle!I was four years old when war broke out and ten when it was all over.
