"The one true story, a funny one, happened in Holland. My regiment was the recce regiment for the 11th Army Division, which meant that we were always right to the front of the main force so to speak. In the regiment, we also had a recce squadron of Scout Guards and at that particular time, I was in one of these Scout Guards and we were sent to have a look at a farm because there were reports of enemy being in the farm.

The four scout cars, myself, Captain Fallows, Corporal Wheatley and another Corporal in another car, so there was four cars going down the road. We eventually found this farm, so we spread out and cautiously went on foot to see what we could see, because it was quite a large farm. All of a sudden from nowhere we heard these explosions, we realised someone had their eyes on us, the place is being mortared. So we all scrambled for cover.

It went on, not very long, just for a few minutes and then it stopped, so we all started to emerge from where everyone had taken hiding. All of a sudden, I heard somebody laughing, then there was two or three people laughing, I thought "what the heck's going on here", so I went to where it all was. Bill in his hurry, when all these mortars had come, had parked his scout car unknowingly, right beside a cow dung. This is perfectly true, one of these shells had gone right in this cow dung and had splattered his car inside and out in cow dung and it stunk for bloody days. He never lived it down for days and days.
That is one memory that I have that was really funny, fortunately nobody was hurt"
