It was summer in about 1943 and I was about 5 years old. I remember being really happy because my father had come home on leave and we were sitting in the garden with the rest of the family.
We were having a lovely time chatting when I remember looking at my dad who was suddenly staring up into the sky. My mother asked him what was wrong and my father quickly rushed us all into the house picking me up as we ran.
As soon as we reached the doorway of the house the garden was sprayed with machine gun bullets from a German plane above. Thanks to my dads quick reactions we were all saved.
Needles to say we did not return to the garden for the rest of the day and stayed in the lounge instead.
