While serving in the A.T.S. at an A.A. gunsite at Portbury near Bristol, we were in "spider" huts with several girls to each hut. As I was a driver, I shared the hut with other drivers and office and kitchen staff. I found it hard to get up in the morning and was always last to gte on parade. My fellow drivers decided to play a joke on me, to get me up and out of bed early for once.
They bought a bell and rang it very loudly near my ears, almost causing me to have a heart attack. Shortly after, our door burst open with an angry Sargeant Major demanding to know if anyone had heard a bell ringing. Of course we knew nothing about it, the bell quickly hidden under a mattress. Apparently the bell had been mistaken for the air-raid alert and the whole camp had immediately rushed into action stations - some still in their nightwear - only to find a peaceful sky!
That little joke misfired allright!
