De Mortuis (Of The Dead)
Now that one phase of war is done,
We may now review,
The battles fought, the victories won,
The hardships suffered too.
Of victory we like to tell,
Yet we must n鈥檈re forget,
Our comrades, who in battle fell,
Their spirit lingers yet.
Their graves are scattered o鈥檈r the sand,
On hill, on plain, in valley.
They sleep now in the Promised Land
Until the last reveille.
They fought and died those gallant men,
That others might attain
The peace and joy of life again,
They did not die in vain.
No flowers, no tears upon their graves,
No pomp, no martial airs
But honour, glory of the brave,
Forever more be theirs.
A wooden cross, a little mound,
A number, a rank and name,
There lies within that sacred ground
A Hero, just the same.
