I was evacuated to Chatteris in Cambs. There were three sisters - we were split up and when I was fourteen I came home. My sisters came back but were evacuated again. One of my sisters died whilst away. I'm not sure why - possibly of neglect.

I remember the doodle bugs. My elder sister and I used to stay upstairs and get dressed and go to the shelter when the airade siren began. Many times we were on the stairway when we heard all the guns and shrapnel. We always made it into the shelter in time. There were 6 children in our family.
