The siren wailing in the night
No time for sleep, we must take flight
Out in the blackness to the shelter
Hurry now helter skelter
Blankets, pillows, all our belongings
Baby's bottle, tea the savings
Feel your way, one after another
down the path, turn the corner
Hear the drone of the heavy bomber
Open wide the shelter door
Bundle everything on the floor
Babys crying in the darkness
Hurry now the gunfires started
Close the door, a sigh of delight
Now we can put on the light
Hear the whistle as the bombs rain down
The crashes and thumps as they hit the ground
Eyes wide open full of fright
Singing and shouting with all our might
Jesus bids us shine with a pure clear light
The baby screams, I drop our light
Blackness again as the light goes out
Too afraid to grope about
Too afraid to leave each other
Shivering and shaking huddled together
Till at last the all-clear sounds
We fall asleep, still cuddled together
Thankful that the air-raid's over.
