Many children were evacuated from London to Wales when the threat of German bombings became imminent. Jean O'Shea remembers leaving Hammersmith to stay with a family in Wales. The children of the family she stayed with stole her postal orders and their parents forced her to attend Chapel three times a day. The family also kept a parrot. Every time one of the Welsh children was naughty they blamed it on jean. This happened so often that whenever the Mum asked who had sone something the parrot would reply "Jean did it! Jean did it!" Some children, however, had better experiences. Violet Fitzgerald was treated so well by her Welsh foster parents that when she was returned to London, both she and the family were heartbroken. Evacuation was a real lottery.
