I am sure very few people will remember now that there was a canteen for the Forces tucked away beside the goods entrance. It was small and had a miniscule kitchen which always smelt of tea, burnt toast and sausages cooking. It was always full of soldiers, sailors and airmen - Scots, English, French, Canadian and Poles. It was good fun. I always remember, after the Dunkirk evacuation, we had lots of weary, hungry boys who had been entrained from the South Coast. It was a very sad and sobering time. Getting home about eleven at night was quite a problem in the blackout. Many a time we walked from the Station to Queen's Cross unless the red-caps were not busy and then we got a lift in a jeep - very unofficial, of course!

Message 1 - Railway Canteens

Posted on: 28 October 2003 by Harry Hargreaves

To this day I remember with great gratitude and affection the railway canteens run by local volunteers and the W.V.S. I vividly remember, as a young sailor after the horror of Dunkirk, being given a precious four days leave and being held up for hours at a station. I was plied with hot tea and sandwiches by ladies old enough to be my grandmother and this was in the middle of the night. Their kindness, concern and, lets face it, love came through vividly and did much to restore sanity to a troubled young mind. Bless them.

Message 1 - canteens

In making my previous comment I should have mentioned an incident that lives with me today as if it was yesterday. It was on the same trip north and we were stopped again at Leeds Station.I headed for the canteen only to find it full of soldiers stretching in a long queue being served by two ladies from behind a small counter. I decided not to join the queue and sat at the back at a small table, closed my eyes and rested. I was brought to my senses by this lady from behind the counter putting a cup of tea and a sandwich in front of me. I heard the discontented grumble from the soldiers and was thoroughly embarrassed. The lady turned to face them and in a broad yorkshire dialect told them to shut up and went on to say "If it wasn't for lads like this you wouldn't be here". The grumbling stopped to be followed by enthusiastic clapping. My face was very red.
