My mum(molly)was born in Gernsey her father(my grandad) HENRY was from mainland Britain her mother DORIS(my nan) was an islander. Before the germans invaded the island her brother RICHARD who was school age was evacuated to scotland.Molly stayed with her parents in gernsey because she was only 3/4years old. After the germans invaded gernsey molly and her parents were taken to germany because her father was orginally from mainland britain and they believed he could spy.(other families were taken aswell) They were taken to a P.O.W. camp called BIBERAC (after the town it was near to).My mum told me a few stories about life while she was in the camp but the one i remember most of all was that somtimes they were escorted by soldiers into the town.

One day while in the town molly needed the toilet so her mother called at one of the houses to see if they could use the toilet. They were invited in and played with the german families children. They used to visit this family when they were aloud into town. The german families name was Heilig. But not all the germans were nice she remembers being spat at by some of the people. My mum gave me a photo of the german family and a postcard of the house they used to visit which i keep along with other things that belonged to my grandad.

Message 1 - My Mum was a POW

Mark,
It was interesting reading your story about your mother during the war in the Channel Islands.
I was at college with a member of the Foss family - Dulcie Foss. Her Mother and father were also sent to Germany during the war. They had a bad time.In fact it was the death of her mother. I only heard a little of my friend's story as I think it was too painful to recall. I think her father was a Methodist Minister on Guernsey.
You must have heard many accounts of the war in that part of the world. What a cruel time it was? My friend died some years ago.
