I left school at 14 and joined Fields Printers in Bradford. Fields printed all sorts of packaging from Heinz baked beans to Gold Flake cigeratte cartons. One day in 1943 we were given a special job we were given maps to print. They were no bigger than a postage stamp and we had to print them full size on Litho paper. We knew there was something special about the maps but no-one said anything. A few months later our manager came round and told us the maps had been used for the RAF Navigators as part of the D-Day liberation.
We felt proud and excited that we had done a small thing that helped with the war effort.
I still remember 2 of the names on that map St Malo and San Nazaire.
