We were going out of school at morning playtime and our Headmaster called my brother and I over and said "your brother is home on leave and is looking over the wall at the bottom of the playground. Go down there and go home with him for to-day and come back to-morrow.

My Mercahnt Navy brother was only 19, but grown up to us and we loved his coming home on leave.

He went away a few days afterwards, off to the Russian convoys, we found out later. He never returned. He is now named on the memorial at the Tower of London his boat was "SS MONTREAL CITY. I have his medals as I am the oldest.

Whenever I visit the memorial I always think of our lovely thoughtful headmaster sending us home with him for the day. He knew what we didn't even realise as children that he may not return.
