july 1939- Aged 16 and a half left school to go to an offic in a factory in the planning and rate fixing. I was the first girl to be employed there.
Later many more women were brought in until the age of 19 when women were called up to the forces or to work in factories. Iwas then moved into the factory to operate an over head electric crane.
One day when I was working at night the electricy had to be turned off because of an air raid. This was my first experience as I had to throw a rope ladder down to the ground. I was scared in the dark as it was over the top of a huge machine. I started down I panicked not realising I was only two feet from the ground, and wondered why all the men were laughing.
