My friend and I are daughters of x servicmen and women( our folks).Throgh our lives we have heard various stories of life throughout the war and we intend to tell you too and enclose some of our many photos. This is a poem by one of our Mums.
Ack Ack.
We stood there in the darkness of the night
Steel helmets firmly set upon our heads
The sky suddenly lit by a dozen beams of searchlight
Was it only six minuets ago we were cosy in our beds
We stood there midst the concrete walls
Each one in her allotted place
Following orders with instant reaction
Each girl the owner of a grim young face
Forgotten now the dance at the NAAFI
The smashing sailors we met at the caf茅
One thought only, but for the job in hand
As part of the defense of the land
Teams of young men, gunners each one pledging to give em hell
Sergeant gunners reporting, drill complete! guns are loaded with the shell
Guns now lie in firing position
Waiting for the next instruction.
Down in the command post underground
The telephonists voice the only sound
While she records each communication
鈥淓nemy aircraft still approaching鈥.
Telescopes scanning the lit up sky
Dials turning with precision
Gunnery officers voice from somewhere in the darkness way up high
Gunsite ready for action.
FIRE!
