I was 17 or 18 at the start of the war, working for a doctor, but then I went to work in a factory in Knighton making aeroplane parts - it's a primary school now. It was hard work - 7 in the morning until 7 at night, and we had to get up really early to get there on the bus. It was good wages, but we would rather have had low wages and no war, even though we were never bombed where I lived.
We did go to dances, though. We used to cycle miles to go to a dance, with a local band playing, and lots of US soldiers, plus some British ones from Church Stretton. But there wasn't much going on because it's very rural round here. We felt isolated.
I remember when my sister got married we had to save coupons for ages to buy dresses. It was very hard; we all did what we could, but it was hard, there wasn't much fun. It was a relief when it was all over.
