I went to stay in a hotel just outside Phoenix Park In Dublin 1940 — 1941. I was about 6 or 7 years old. I was woken one night by my father who bundled me up in a blanket and took me down into the cellar of the hotel. We felt the ground shake, and it was the bomb that fell in Phoenix park. We stayed in the cellar all night. The next morning we got a bus, My mother and I and my father went back to barracks. My mother and i went onto a bus and saw a house collapsed inwards and the roof perched still on top. Whether anyone was left inside we will never know.
I would like to add that Dublin as a republic was neutral during World War 2. When we were bombed, the city was fully lit with street lights and shops lit. The official line was that the Germans bombers had lost their way!
