Here are a few thoughts of school in the last war.
The Head Teacher was Miss Base at the Browick Road School. When I was in Miss Allen鈥檚 class at Browick Road School, we all had to knit 1 sock on 4 needles to be paired up for the troops. (I often wonder how it worked). I would knit with 4 needles, but not the heel. Miss Allen, the teacher, would do this for me.
I also remember we had our feet measured to see if we could get some extra clothing coupons. One day my feet were just at the line so the teacher took a ruler and pushed it down the front of my socks and across the top of my foot. This made the sock go over the line and extra coupons were given to us as my father was a pensioner. She said he would be pleased with them. We had to put our heads against the wall with a line on the floor.
When I went to the Secondary Modern School, the first thing we made was a dress to wear for school in the summer terms and the last thing I made was a tray cloth.
The dress was turquoise, white and brown check. Our school uniform was a brown gymslip and turquoise blouse for the winter. I was one of the first to leave school at 15. Miss Clarke was the Head Teacher and the school song was:
鈥溾業t鈥檚 good to see the school we knew
The land of youth and dream
To meet again the rule we knew
Before we took the stream
For working days and holidays
Were good and melancholy days
They were great days and jolly days
At the best school of all鈥
I used to think this should have been sung when we left school.
