My Grandparents and Mum lived in London all through the Second World War. Mum and Nan did not look forward to the time they had to spend in the air-raid shelter at the bottom of the garden,I shouldn't imagine anyone did. Both of them were absolutely terrified of spiders...........you will be happy to know that I have inherited this trait! One particular night, Grandad had gone off to work, he was on firewatch. The air-raid siren went off, so Mum and Nan took their blankets and reluctantly went down to the shelter, knowing they would get no rest this night. The raid began, apparently it was a particularly bad one. Mum and Nan were in a terrible state, one reason being the bombing, the other having to share the shelter with several eight-legged companions. Both women looked at each other and without further ado, left the shelter and went into the house...foolish, I hear you say...they took a big risk. Apparently both of them fell asleep as soon as they got into their beds and this is where my Grandad found them in the morning, when he returned from work. Grandad was so angry but so relieved that Mum and Nan were safe. Two women, more afraid of spiders than Hitler's bombs!
