I was born in Coventry and my mum and dad lived there during some of the big air raids and they told me that they slept in a cupboard under the stairs. But my grandparents were in a huge air-raid shelter. They got a direct hit and they were killed. They were buried in a mass grave on Hearsal Common, because there were so many people it was difficult to get people buried.My Aunty Norma survived--she was on the other side of the shelter. For a long time she couldn't bear the sounds of the sirens. They were killed before I was born. I never had a chance to meet them---it's a bit of missing history.
Later on in the war my dad worked at Alvis aero engines and they moved the family out to Stone in Staffordshire and they were billeted with the vicar(who was famous for going out on his bike visiting parishoners, and forgetting where he'd left it!). Dad was in the homeguard--for years his uniform was in the wardrobe and when we were kids we used to dress up in it.
