I was in Dover queuing for a bus when there was an explosion. A shell had fallen somewhere. Whenever there was shelling we had to go into a shelter and the shelling warning was double the usual warning. Two people ahead of me in the queue was a Naval officer about 40 years old. He was old enough to remember the First World War and he began to shake like a jelly. A woman in front who was about 30 years old turned around and said "That's the type we rely on to care for us!" The shell had fallen on a queue to the cinema and there was carnage. But this man was the first to help and provide assistance and he worked tirelessly. Later I made inquiries and was told that this naval officer was the greatest help in this emergency. What a thoughtless remark from the woman. It made me realise we shouldn't make spot judgments on people.
