Me and my friend using our machine gun.
Was stationed near Faversham on June 6th 1943. My unit sailed from Southend in a convoy to North France. Many visual experiences including seeing HMS Belfast firing broadsides. Unable to land because of heavy seas, laid of shore for 24 hours. My unit was a heavy machine gun regiment. (Vickers) Moved across the bocarge country. Through France into Belgium and then into Holland finally into Germany. Took part in the unsuccessful attempt to relieve the Paratroops at Arnhem. In Holland on my birthday 27th November aged 20 came very very close to getting killed. House bombed, our single room survived. Slow move into Germany through the Siegfried Line.
We were sent at Christmas down South to assist the Americans who had suffered serious attack in Arddennes. Anyway the Germans were falling back on all fronts and we finally finished up our side Hamburg with in 2 days. The local German force sued for peace and Hamburg was declared and open city. Later we pushed through the city towards the Danish Border. At this juncture, the war finished. I spent 2 more years in Germany Essen, Berlin and the Herz Mountains, home from there June 1947. 4 Years and 7 months in all. Good-bye.
