When I was about five year's old I was playing in the back garden of our house which was 38 Grace Avenue,Maidstone.
Ilooked up and saw a Spitfire firing cannon shells at V1 flying bomb which were known as "Doodlebugs". The V1 carried a tonne of high explosive which made a very loud bang indeed. One had crashed in a cherry orchard a mile from our house on another occasion when people were picking cherries. No one was badly hurt but they were deafened by the explosion. The blast twisted a window frame in our house without breaking the glass but we had a draughty window for evermore!
My mother saw me and the arial drama from the kitchen window and rushed out into the garden. She grabbed hold of me and we dived under the runner beans for cover! This was a strange thing to do because we had a perfectly good air raid shelter in the garden.Panic makes people do some very strange things!Meanwhile, the Spitfire had managed to turn the Doodlebug off course and it veered away towards the North Downs and exploded in mid-air about a mile away.
