my ambulance
This story has been added to The People's War Website by CSV Volunteer, Ann Toomey, on behalf of the author Molly Farmer, who understands the site's terms and conditions.
I first started to drive ambulances on the 3rd September, this was after some training. Our first call out was for a bomb which had dropped at Hammersmith Broadway. We had to put on full gas kit and our names were put in to a hat to see who should go. I was one of the chosen. A very frightening experience.
I got into the ambulance, as the driver, my feet were shaking so badly I could hardly drive - I was just so scared - what would we do if there was a body?
When we got to the Broadway, there was a Warden standing in the middle of the road - I shouted to him "where's the bomb" he said there wasn't a bomb. He pointed at a plate glass window where a crowd who had panicked had fallen through. I got the injured onto the ambulance, there was one stretcher case. When we got to the hospital the doctors, nurses etc. were all wearing gas masks - the doctor asked me "how bad is it?" He had no idea what to expect so I opened the ambulance doors and said "would those who can walk, please come outside", and they all walked out! The doctor who had been so worried got hold of me by my neck and said that he had never been so frightened in all his life.
Another thing I remember was that my grandmother loved sweets, so I made sure that she always had a good supply.
