This story was submitted to the Peoples war site by Wendy Young on behalf of Mrs Lena Hickman and has been added to the site with her permission she fully understands the site,s terms and conditions. In 1941 when the civil defence had finished with us we were sent to a training centre at Park Royal in North West London where we spent six weeks training to be A.I.D Inspectors.
The factories where we worked were situated in North West London.
The first factory made Jacks for working the bomb doors of the Halifax Bomber. It was my job to inspect the parts which when put together made the jack.
The parts had to be made to the specification of the blue print. We had to use a micrometer; if it didn't come up to the specification it had to be chucked out.
One day a group of pilots came to see what we were doing and congratulated us on our work. We felt we were doing a really good job but it was very hard work.
In another factory I inspected the Jacks for the bofor gun
