1940 - I was coming home from school through Manor Sports ground when I saw a German plane flying southwards. I saw his bomb doors open and about half a dozen bombs came down. The bombs landed in Leigh Road, Worthing.
There was a big explosion and a mushroom cloud. What I remember clearly is seeing a storage box on top of the cloud. It must have been in the loft of the house that was hit and thrown up as the bomb exploded.
4 years later in 1944, I was in the audience of the Plaza cinema (now Gala Bingo) in Rowlands Road. Suddenly we heard the roar of an aeroplane and shortly after a very loud explosion.
The cinema lights went on and the manager came on the stage. He said there was nothing to worry about, that a plane had gone in to the sea. This announcement led to some people fainting in the aisles.
After the announcement, the film was then put back on again.
(The plane was an RAF Lancaster that went in to the sea, close to Worthing pier).
