During the war years the Americans were based at Sturgate, the Polish were based at Hemswell, whilst Swinderby was occupied with Australian, Canadian and New Zealand personnel.
Scampton, Skellinghtorpe, Dinholme, Waddington and Hemswell were the main airfields in the Lincoln area. Our village saw a lot of activity in the skies.
I remember the old Hamdon bombers which were replaced with Lancasters. The planes used to be flying so low I could see the pilot and rear gunner as they went over.
They usually went on night raids. We would count them out and wave and we were also there to wave and count them back.
After a while they started to do daylight raids.
