I can remember Chamberlain on the radio saying we were at war with Germany. Everyone was upset, they were frightened. I remember the air raids too well. We鈥檒l never forget things like that. The air raids were terrible really and you had to black out everything. You couldn鈥檛 light a cigarette in the streets. Everything was 鈥淧ut that light out!鈥� Sometimes we used to hear them coming over and we would just get down in the cellar or wherever we thought we鈥檇 be safe. We had an air raid shelter in our street, but we preferred to stay at home and go down in the cellar, we thought it was safe.
