My father was an instructor in the regular Air Force when my parents married and naturally my mother was, as a result, responsible for myself and my sister and subsequently my young brother.
Walking two miles to school with our gas masks in boxes hung over our shoulders was a nuisance since they swung about, especially when we ran if we were a little late.
We had lived in several places due to my dad's postings, but during the war we lived in Cannock and our school was a small whitewashed building with a garden, replaced in war time by an allotment and air raid shelters.
My grandfather and grandmother arrived from London one day, deciding to come and live with us for safety's sake. They brought a load of furniture which resulted in all our rooms being over full and uncomfortable for playing. My sister and I were not paticularily happy at this time...
When the air raid siren sounded and we could hear the throbbing noise of German planes, mother would make us lie under a heavy, sturdy sideboard.
At school we had to attend to the allotment where various things were grown to help out with our diet. I hated gardening...
There was an apple tree near the Headmaster's window and since we had little or no fuit in those days due to the war, my friend and I made up our minds to go to the school really early the next day, planning to help ourselves to the 'forbidden fruit.' Unfortunately the Headmaster arrived earlier than normal and caught us in the act!He said:"I've upset your apple cart..."Funny remark it may be, but it didn't make us laugh!
Result...Caning on both hands!
