This story was submitted to the People鈥檚 War site by a Volunteer from Reading on behalf of Mr Tony Watts and has been added to the site with his permission. Mr Watts fully understands the site鈥檚 terms and conditions.
When the war ended we had bonfires in the street which burnt great big holes in the tarmac. We had street parties where people used up all the ration food they鈥檇 managed to save, so we had jellies and custard and sandwiches and cake. Everyone just spread their food along the tables to share.
During the war we used to get tins of chocolate powder sent over to the children from Canada. You could make it as a chocolate drink but my grandmother used it to make a chocolate sponge cake.
