I was in the Auxiliary Fire Service and when the invasion happened, we were sent from London to the Midlands. There was a three day blitz in Norwich, and as we got near to Norwich, we saw ambulances and hundreds of people with legs and arms tied up, and didn't like what we saw, and then we were told that the local hospital had had to evacuate the patients.
When we were in the Midlands we were sent to Hitchin and I saw a haystack on fire, and someone had to stay to see that the fire didn't flare up. I saw all the stars (lying on my back looking at the stars) and feeling very spiritual, and at the same time saw Lancaster bombers going out, and then saw three limping back and one caught the trees, killing a cow and the farmer's wife and pilot as it crashed. I went into the farmhouse and saw a certificate of the farmer's daughter -- the little girl had passed her piano exam.
