After the Christmas Blitz of 1940,we came out of the air raid shelter, the cellar of a disused church at the corner of Oldham Rd.,and Osborne St.,it was rather dark, and we were glad to get out of the shelter has we had been there for many hours. We were all walking home to the next street,Fielden St., where we lived. There was me{Harold aged 7},my brother Michael aged 10,my brother John aged4,my dad Michael, and my mam Annie.Michael and I saw what looked like a tin can in the gloom, and we tried to kick it to each other,it seemed rather heavy, but we persevered. Then an Air Raid Warden came running up,pushing me and Michael to the side, and plunging the object into a bucket of sand,at the same time shouting to us"You bloody idiots,it`s a bomb".After the tumult had settled we then learned we had tried to play football with an incendiary bomb. And we got an `ear bashing` all the way home from my Mam & Dad.
