I was exempt from the forces because I worked in a food shop. My husband was the manager and he had to go. He joined the Navy on HMS Keppel.

The shop I worked in was Melias on Midland Road in Royston, I was finished up at Barnsley as relief manager.

The fist air raid siren that went off was on a Friday night and I was in the bath!

We had some good times and some bad times.
