Action of Experience

I was six or seven years old and this happened during an air raid on Paisley in 1941. We were with all the neighbours in our brick built air raid shelter listening to the gunfire of the anti aircraft guns; I was in my Siren Suit.
Suddenly we all heard the whistling sound of a bomb coming down. The gentleman sitting opposite me, who would have been in his fifties, jumped off the bench and crawled underneath it. What did everyone else do? They all burst out laughing. The laughter stopped suddenly when the bomb landed with an almighty bang, leaving everybody in a state of shock. The gentleman, who was the cause of the laughter, obviously knew what was going to happen.
The bomb had landed about half a mile away in a field. It caused no serious injury or damage, other than throwing up huge lumps of clay soil; although some of it went through the roof of a neighbour鈥檚 garage.
