I lived with my grandparents during WWII at Belister View,Haltwhistle. I can remember watching German POWs marching from Haltwhistle Railway Station to Featherston POW Camp. I used to climb onto the garden gate and see the German soldiers go up Belister Bank to the camp, Italian POWs were also kept at Featherston.
The German POWs were allowed to go to the village dance on a Saturday night. Peter, a German prisoner, used to work on the fields near our allotment and if it was raining he would sit in our shed and eat his sandwiches.
