This story was submitted to the People's War site by a volunteer from Northumberland on behalf of Joyce Brison. Mrs. Brison fully understands the site's terms and conditions, and the story has been added to the site with her permission.

My story is one that has been passed down through the family but I'm afraid I do not know precisely when the incident giving rise to it, occurred.

The story relates to my Grandfather, Archibald Patterson Little, who, early on morning, was working in a hay field near Howick, Northumberland when a lone German plane flew over, possibly returning from a raid on Glasgow. The pilot decided to take a few pot shots at Grandfather but, fortunately, he missed. However, the pilot then circled around the field and began firing again at Grandfather. It was at that point that Grandfather ran for his life and, with a strafe of bullets following him, he threw himself into one of the haystacks.

Thankfully, Grandfather survived unhurt but he was badly shaken by his brush with the enemy!
