After being evacuated to Devon on 1 September 1939, on my third placement I was moved from Sheldon to another village away from my elder sister. The home of my new 'guardians' had a son who was ill, and the house was under quarantine. I was not allowed to attend school, and was treated like a scivvy. Lighting fires, taking up tea to the woman of the house, feeding the livestock and chickens etc. My mail was censored, but eventually I managed to send a letter to my father telling all. He sent back a postal order for my fare home, and I remember dragging my suitcase through the snow to the station, after being admonished by the woman, after she had read my letter first. I was ten.
