My late father was in the army during the war and when I was about 3 years old (that would have been about 1943) he was scheduled to go to France.
He came home for 48 hours embarkation leave and there were tearful farewells as he set off for we know not what.
Immediately after he had gone, my brother, one year older than me, a young girl who had been evacuated to our home and myself all went down with chicken pox. That would not have been too bad, but my mother also succumbed.
So my father had to come home on compassionate leave to care for us all. While he was with us his unit went abroad.
He never did get to go abroad at all, but he felt very guilty for the rest of his life that he had deserted his mates.
