My father was an ARP warden stationed at a warden’s post in George Street.

I had a bunk of my own there with a little tin hat to wear.

One night when the alarm had sounded and they were all waiting for action, my teddy bear fell out of my bunk and made this growling noise.

Everyone jumped up, on instant alert — it was like something out of Dad’s Army!
