In 1938 at the Munich crisis.There were only 4 anti-aircraft guns in the Woolwich arsenal to defend the whole of England! They had rubber guns to fool Germans into thinking we had a lot more!
Pepper was kept in bottles so it could be thrown in the faces of any Germans!
The phrase 'Why need England tremble' was used everywhere.
There was a spy in Donnington and Donnington deppo caught fire in 1940 around Christmas time. There had been a Christmas party for the children and it was thought that was how he got in.
RNAD at Ketley - an urgent order came through for stuff to meet a convoy. The Director at Wolverhampton was worried and made a journey down and walked in and was told we've altered the labels and he said Why? so they had to alter them all back again. It was eventually found to be a new member of staff. I had started on the Monday morning and solved the problem of how they got the telephone number by just phoning Directory Enquiries!!
The soldiers used to drill in Trench and everyone used to come and watch until an elderly lady shouted at the sergeant major for using bad language to the troops.
Rationing - one egg a week was all that was allowed but you could have more if they were cracked so people used to crack them on purpose. We were only allowed five hundred weight of coal.
