Staffs County Council libraries, on behalf of the author, have submitted this story. The author fully understands the rules and regulations of the People's War website.

During the war years, I was employed on war work at a famous well known tyre factory. Everything in those days was on ration. You were allowed so many ounces of butter, bacon, sweets and other things. Tins of salmon and tins of fruit were very hard to come by. I was looking forward to my wedding on Boxing day. One very dark morning at 5am (there were no street lights on) whilst walking along the pavement, I kicked something lying on the pavement. Using my small torch, I looked and what did I find? Half a pound of Stork margarine! This was more precious than gold! My mother used it to make lots of small cakes for my wedding day!!
