I was 9 when the war started. Mum was very upset because she remembered the First World War. Also, she had a 21 year old son.
We were all night in the air raid shelter; at times then we didn't go to school next day.
I was evacuated to South Wales on my 11th birthday. My mother had to pay 30/- per week into the post office for her evacuated children's keep.
When you kissed your mother goodbye, you didn't know if you were going to see her again. Even now, films about evacuation make me feel ill.
In Shirehampton and Avonmouth, the junior schools were 'mixed' during the war. They hadn't been before.
