I didn鈥檛 have any new togs everything had been passed on by somebody else. My dolls pram was very old and would be an antique if I had kept it. My clothes were made out of other people鈥檚 old clothes and I had a dressing gown and coat, which had been made from something dyed purple because that was the colour of dye, which took well,
I started at King鈥檚 Road School in January 1944. I had a gas mask, which was supposed to look like Donald Duck, but I hated it because it smelled of rubber. At school there was an air raid shelter under the playground and I just remember one practice drill when we all went down.
At home we didn鈥檛 go to the air raid shelter at the top of the street, Collinridge Road; because my grandmother wasn鈥檛 very well and he doctor said it wouldn鈥檛 be good for her, so we had a door going out of the cellar under the grate so that we could go down there if necessary but I don鈥檛 remember us ever going down.
