As the war became worse, my sister and I were sent away for saftey. I was quite a sickly child and my mother felt I would be happier in the country. We went to a small farm in Radstock and stayed at the farmhouse. We were very badly treated given hardly and food and sent out from early morning till tea time. We had to look after ourselves. We spent most of the day sitting in the farmhouse garden and wandering through to the village. My parents came to visit and as we were so unhappy, decided to take us home.
My mother was quite young at the time so she managed to send us to stay with an aunt in portishead. She was running a home for orphan children. We were sent there and were very happy there. I wasn't old enough to go to school so I stayed at home with my aunt everyday. My sister was at school and had lots of friends there. We stayed there until the end of the war. We had a reunion and went back to the house that we had stayed in. The family that now owned the house allowed us to bring our souvenirs and photographs to. Eveybody enjoyed the day very much. There was one man there who was orphaned during the war and he remembered he was the first child to arrive at the house. He could remember lots of things that we had all done together, like learning to ride a bike. We were quite unhappy when it was time to go home.
