I remember my father, Fred Wilton telling me one day about what happened when he was in the army. He was on a boat with my Uncle Stan and was talking with his comrades on one side of the boat. He moved over to the other side of the boat to talk to Uncle Stan, and as he did, a bomb went off where he had been standing. If he had left a minute later, he would have been killed. He was distraught that his friends who he had just spoken to were now dead.
I also remember my mother, May Wilton telling me of her closest encounter with a bomb. Our family friend, 'Uncle' Walter could not join the army because he had flat feet, but stayed at home to look out for doodlebugs. One day, a doodlebug hit our street very close the the house where my mother and her sister were living. My mother remembers going outside to see what had happened, and saw people clearing away debris. Two people walked past her carrying a black bag which had blonde curls hanging out of the top. My mother remembers thinking that it must be her neighbours child as she had blonde curls.
