I remember I was shopping one day with my Mum,sister and a child my Mum was looking after. The child was in a pushchair and we also had our dog ,Peggy with us.Mum had left an alarm clock to be mended at one of the shops, she crossed the road to get it and we stayed on this side.Suddenly an enemy plane came down very low and started firing at the shoppers.Everyone was screaming to get into the shops. We managed to get into the Butchers and he told us to get on the floor, which we did.My sister was still holding the pushchair handle so it tipped up and the poor child was flung into the air, luckily she was okay.My Mum came running across the road looking for us,we were all alright, but we couldn't find Peggy, the dog.We walked home and there she was waiting for us.
I remember going to the cinema and hearing the drone of the doodlebugs, and then the silence. You never knew where the bomb would land.
Me and my sister liked dancing,so when we were sheltering in the underground we would try and entertain everyone.Although it was a terrible time there was such comradeship amongst everyone,It was a strange site seeing all those people down there wondering and worrying what they would face when the all clear sounded.
I was evacuated twice. The first time we came back because my brother and his mate, who were in a different house to me,caught Scabies,so Mum wasn't happy about this.Another time my best friends Mum and Dad paid for me to go as company for their daughter, but neither of us liked it so we came back.
These memories were told to volunteer Kathy Brady and written with Gladys's permission.
