Len鈥檚 father was in a reserve occupation and therefore not required for military service but he did serve as an officer in the Home Guard. The front room of the family home was regularly used as a classroom in which to train/lecture his soldiers.
Southampton suffered badly from enemy bombing and Len recalls seeing the first barrage balloons flying over the city.

Just prior to D-Day there was a massive build-up of soldiers in the city, with British soldiers occupying one area and Americans another. When Len was just 9 years old he remembers being taken to the waterfront to see the build-up of landing craft and ships in the docks.
