On June 6th 1944 I was a Captain in the Royal Engineers Movements and Transport Section and along with my colleague Captain Bill Dale, I had been seconded to the 9th Canadian Infantry Brigade as a Military Landing Officer. The Army equivalent of a Navy Beachmaster.
We had taken part in the secret planning of the assault. Our job was to fit the troops and their guns and vehicles into various types of landing craft allocated to us by the Royal Navy, commensurate with the Brigade Commander’s overall plan. Once ashore in Normandy on ‘Juno’ Beach, our job was to join up all these small units into their proper formations, ready to go forward to engage the enemy.
