Delivering the post in war-time Basingstoke
I lived in Popham during the war. I used to get up at 2.30, cycle 15 miles to Basingstoke and sort and then deliver the post. We used to finish the sorting about 10.30 and then work all hours delivering the letters and parcels, cycling round where the bombs had fallen, but you had to deliver the mail. I had a racing bike! It was really laden down. Some days it was really hard out in all weathers.
