War in the fields
Marise Relf who went to live in Bearsted with her parents in 1940 joined the land army in 1943 and went to be trained in Littlestone. 鈥淚n the land army of course we often worked in the fields and one day when I was hoeing I heard a doodlebug approaching then, suddenly, there was no noise. That meant it was about to fall out of the air. I threw myself flat in the field, and put on my tin hat. The doodlebug landed in Maidstone which was quite close with many casualties. Once again I had been spared but we all put money into the bomb casing from the doodle bug in a street in Maidstone to help the families who had been injured by it.
We often drove tractors which before the war were only driven by men. We could see from this vantage point the guys piloting the spitfires and usually waved to them.鈥
